PHOTO MANIPULATION PROJECT

PHOTO MANIPULATION

PHOTO MANIPULATION

The Ask

For this project, I was asked to use a single image to produce three distinct Photoshop compositions that demonstrated a range of creative and technical skills. This required applying advanced masking, layering, and blending techniques while exploring different moods, compositions, and effects to meet the project’s presentation guidelines.

Key Skills

The Process

  1. I chose an image of Taylor Swift to use to manipulate using photoshop, as she is my favorite artist and we had to use a celebrity.

  2. The first image, I picked a photo of a forest to use to inside of her face, which I did through masking the photo of the forest and then shaped it to fit Taylor’s head. I also mirrored the trees so that they would appear like a reflection inside her head. I made the background gray to add some contrast to the green.

  3. The second image, I started with another background of a forest, then I cut out Taylor’s head by tracing it and removing the background. Then I duplicated it and lowered the opacity of both images, pulling the photo with the even lower opacity slightly away from her to create the 3D effect.

  4. The third image, I started with a green background, then added the cut out photo of Taylor’s head and changed the colors through an inversion filter. Then I used a pen tool to create a glowing outline around her.

  5. After I made the images, I added them all to a single black background, making sure they were aligned, and sized evenly.

The Outcome

Through this project, I gained a deeper understanding of Photoshop’s tools and techniques for image manipulation. I learned how to apply creative problem-solving to transform a single image into multiple unique compositions while maintaining technical precision. This process strengthened my attention to detail, improved my workflow efficiency, and enhanced my ability to follow design and presentation guidelines from concept to final output.

Below I’ve included some of the different elements that I featured in my project, as well as a link to the full project.
